Monday Writing Markets

Welcome to this week’s writing markets. Please note, these aren’t places looking for freelance writers for ongoing gigs, like in Jodee’s links. These are publications and websites  accepting queries or submissions from freelance writers. I received an email from a magazine editor who doesn’t mind receiving queries from freelancers, but many people who saw her guidelines listed on our Monday Markets wrote in to apply for a job. Once again, these aren’t jobs, they’re markets.

Living Light News - From the Online Guidelines:

Writing We’re Looking For:
  • profiles of prominent Christians in such areas of life as sports, entertainment, business and the arts who place Christ first in their life. (800-1,000 words)
  • news stories from within the markets we serve (650 words)
  • family-focused articles to improve our readers’ lives and possibly provide a Christian perspective on such topics as weight loss, parenting, fitness, finances, relationships, personal growth. These stories, which are not written from a first person perspective, provide quotes from ‘experts’ and steer readers to related resources such as books and websites. (600-650 words)

Please Note: We’re sorry, but we don’t print any fiction or poetry.

Pays .08 cents per word and buys First Rights. Email queries to shine@livinglightnews.org. See more details at the online guidelines.

High Country News

From the Online Guidelines

We are looking for taut, pithy, entertaining essays and opinion pieces based on the real-life experiences of Westerners. The piece should be no more than 750 words long and tied into current issues and events, though we will consider less current essays if they make strong statements about life in the West.

We are open to a wide range of philosophies, perspectives and styles, but are particularly interested in those that forward the project’s goal: To nudge the West from a past of reckless land use, federal dependency and warring interests to a future of environmental responsibility, ecumenical self-governance and good neighbors.

Payment ranges from $100 to $200 per accepted piece. Some rewriting may be involved. Submissions should be in single-spaced plain text in the body of an e-mail, with “WOTR submission” and the title in the subject line. No attachments, please. Please e-mail to Writers on the Range Editor Betsy Marston, betsym@hcn.org.

Please see the guidelines for full details.

German Life

From the Online Guidelines:

To suggest a story, send us a query letter (3 or 4 paragraphs) with backup clips of your idea. Keep in mind that we receive numerous solicited and unsolicited manuscripts. Due to the large volume of unsolicited materials received by the editorial office, only queries of interest will be acknowledged. If you wish to verify receipt of your materials, we suggest scheduling them via certified mail or other traceable means. We schedule articles for our editorial calendar approximately a year and a half in advance of publication. (German Life assumes no responsibility for the return or condition of unsolicited manuscripts, photographs or art .)

Your manuscript should not exceed 1,200 words. Longer pieces will be considered solely at the Editor’s discretion. Smaller pieces appropriate for a sidebar or one of the magazine’s departments should range between 300 and 800 words. Book reviews average 250 to 300 words

Payment is upon publication and ranges from $300 to $500 for feature articles, from $100 to $130 for reviews and short pieces, and up to $80 for fillers. In exchange for remuneration, German Life retains first English/German language serial rights.

Please visit the guidelines for full details.
