Building a Blog into a Blog Network without Funding, Backing or Partners

The news regarding the b5Media blog network‘s  restructuring and restaffing is leading to a lot of speculation around the webosphere. Specifically folks are wondering about the future of blog networks in general. Will they all be taken over by the venture capitalists who are funding them and turned into impersonal content portals, or will they be able to flourish and grow into lively communities? I’m receiving so much mail asking about my own blog network that I’m prompted to write my thoughts about the state of the Freelance Writing Jobs Network and where we stand today. Does Your Blog Have a Comment Policy?

I find myself having to defend my comment policy from time to time. I’ve been accused of editing comments so only the rosy ones come through, or being biased about who is allowed to comment at the FWJ network. None of that is true. I have a comment policy in place and like to abide by that policy, it’s really nothing personal. I just don’t feel rudeness or personal attacks have a place in an intelligent discussion. Yesterday I heard from another writer (who requested anonymity) who had the same pet peeve – Blogging for someone who hasn’t a clue of what blogging is about. Lordy, where do I get started. Let me share a few stories: I once worked for a woman who was starting a blog network (which is now struggling). She called me on the recommendation of another blogger and hired me not only because of my writing, but because I could sort of [Read more…]

When someone hires you to blog, which tasks are they hiring you for?

Lately I’ve been seeing these sorts of questions a lot at forums: Someone wants to hire me for their blog – should I charge extra for networking? How much do you charge for moderating comments? How much do you charge for each comment you respond to? Should I charge extra for commenting on other blogs? The client wants me to Digg stuff! What the? I just want to post twice a week – what do you charge for that? Here’s the deal. To me, blogging has always been a package deal. Frankly, if you’re a blogger, there are certain tasks [Read more…]
