As you know, I credit social media for a good chunk of my success. Thanks to various social media tools I’ve managed to grow my business and my client base. I know this interests you because many of you write to me to ask me about social media and social media networking and marketing. I also know that many of you would like to attend some of the blogging and social media conferences but can’t because of obligations at home. That’s why I’m pleased to tell you about the 2o10 Social Media Success Summit. What is the Social Media Success [Read more…]
b5Media: I’m in a Better Place Now

When I first began working as a blogger, b5Media was at the top of my list of places to work. I mean, Liz Strauss, Brian Clark and Darren Rowse, all bloggers I looked up to, were part of b5Media. As someone who wanted to make a name for myself as a blogger, I felt this was a positive step in the right direction. My little freelance writing jobs blog was doing OK, I had some lucrative freelance writing clients, I just started working for About.com as their guide to Weblogs, a b5 gig was the icing on the cake…and I [Read more…]
b5Media Layoffs Are a Good Reminder to Spread Those Freelance Writing Eggs Around

If you hung out on Twitter for any amount of time today, you may have learned b5Media had yet another round of layoffs. This time both part time and full time freelance writers for that content site were locked out of their blogs and shown the door. Some of the laid off writers were with b5Media since its inception about five years ago. It’s a sad day for a company that once held such a great buzz and terrific vibe. I was a blogger for b5Media and the experience was valuable (blogging lessons from Darren Rowse, I mean, does it [Read more…]
Holiday Gifts for Freelance Writers: 10 Book Recommendations for the Writers in Your Life

Every year I put out a call for recommendations for gifts for freelance writers and every year a flurry of representatives send me recommendations for gifts having nothing to do with writers or writing at all. So this year, I’m taking matters into my own hands by recommending my favorite books for writers. Mind you, not every book here is a book about writing, but all of them benefit freelance writers. Full disclosure: A couple of the books on this list were sent to me to review, and I give my honest review here. However, most of the books on [Read more…]
Greetings from BlogWorld

Even though the BlogWorld and New Media Expo official conference begins today, there was no shortage of learning and schmoozing yesterday. I met some of my blogging friends yesterday and renewed old acquaintances. It was good to hang out with David Peralty. We’re speaking together today and yesterday we got to know each other and share ideas. While hanging out in the lounge we met up with the always enthusiastic and very friendly John Chow. I don’t know if there’s anyone more excited to be here! The first person I bumped into when I registered was Shai Coggins who is [Read more…]
A Few Blogging Tips from Darren Rowse
Deb’s Note: In December 2006 I interviewed Darren Rowse while auditioning for a job with About.com. I did get the job and worked as About.com’s Guide to Weblogs for a year in 2007. I’m reprinting some of my greatest hits here. I also conducted interviews with John Chow, the Go Fug Yourself ladies, NBT’s own Gayla McCord and Jeremy Wright. Expect to see those profiles here in the upcoming months. This interview was from the first time I spoke with Darren – now he’s someone I’m happy and proud to call friend. He’s just as helpful and gracious now as [Read more…]
A Little Weekend Link Love – July 12 – 13, 2008
by Deborah Ng If there’s one thing I noticed lately it’s that there’s no shortage of blogs about writing, freelance writing, freelance writing jobs and blogs. What this means is there’s no shortage of writing jobs and advice. What do you think? The more the merrier or overkill? Here’s what I’m reading this weekend: Here’s a great post by Lorelle Von Fossen at Blog Herald on where to find blogging jobs and how to apply. It’s a follow up to Blogger Jobs: What are They Looking For? How to Stretch your Articles into Dollars at Blogging Tips. What do you [Read more…]
