Read What You Write

Jerry Springer. Everyone knows the name though no one will admit to watching the show. It’s been on for decades and yet the show’s host, Jerry Springer, admits he doesn’t watch it. Why? In an article published on the Huffington Post, the talk show host said “I don’t watch the show, but it’s not aimed at 66-year-old men. If I were in college, I would watch. I enjoy doing it. It’s a lot of fun.” I’d wager there are several (hundred) writers that don’t read what they write. Whether it is a blog post, column or article, many writers finish [Read more…]

Things that Go Bump When We Write – Tough Topics

http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/2010/09/things-that-go-bump-when-we-write-tough-topics/

Life is full of difficult, uncomfortable situations. How we deal with those on a personal basis is one thing… how you deal with tough topics as a writer may be completely different. One thing that doesn’t work is avoidance. Usually at FWJ we have to caution writers about taking on too much work, but the room clears when sensitive subject posts are passed out. Why? Fear. No one wants to get their name tagged to a controversial subject because they fear they will lose out on future gigs because of it. No one wants to call the woman with breast [Read more…]

Things that Go Bump When We Write – Phone Phobia

http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/2010/09/things-that-go-bump-when-we-write-phone-phobia/

Being a successful writer is tied to being an efficient one. We need to put out work in a manner that meets our deadlines and budget lines. Unfortunately, there are a variety of things that keep us from writing as well, as often or as efficiently as we need to – including faux phobias. I say faux phobias because most of us really just hate doing a particular thing, but don’t necessarily have a debilitating fear of it. The next couple of posts will take a look at some common faux phobias writers find themselves afflicted with and how to [Read more…]

Side-Note: Making the Most of a Writing Opportunity

http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/2010/09/side-note-making-the-most-of-a-writing-opportunity/

If I asked you a question and you knew the answer would you answer it? What if it meant thousands of people would see your response and have a link to your website? That’s the great thing about FWJ. It gives great opportunities to newbie and seasoned writers. A few days ago I wrote a post about writing on hot topics, a few do’s and don’ts. At the end I posed a question to the FWJ community: I wanted to hear some of your ideas on how to or how not to write about a hot topic. I asked for [Read more…]

I woke especially early today to tackle my to do list. I tried for a working weekend last weekend and it just didn’t happen. I commented on another blog recently that the best way for me to stay focused and productive is to plan ahead. Everything I do is scheduled. Last week, I had a bunch of meetings scheduled at school and it through me off of my schedule, thus, the need to catch up. Sometimes I’m a huge fan of the four day work week. Other days, I’m ready to sign the petition for an eight day week. So [Read more…]
