Bonus job tip o’ the day: Clients hiring for blog and online gigs are not just looking for writers, they’re looking for folks who can find and edit images. It’s rare that a blog client wants to do this, and it’s usually included in your job tasks. With that in mind make sure you know where to [Read more…]

Our list today is still low on decent telecommute gigs, but there’s more than earlier this week. Job tip o’ the day: Two words for you – BE NICE. Some people think nice is a boring word sure, but in the realm landing gigs it’s good to be nice. This is basic networking 101. Of course there is the flip side – read When [Read more…]

5 Reasons You're Not Making Money as a Blogger

Thanks to that famous $100,000 Google check and the whole “make money online” craze, everyone who blogs thinks they’re going to earn enough money so they can quit their day jobs and retire in style. It’s a nice thought. Realistically very few people make hundreds of thousands of dollars blogging each year. It’s not a stretch to earn a livable wage as a blogger, however. If you’re spending all your time blogging and have very little in the bank to show for it, you may be taking the wrong approach. Whether you blog on your own, or blog for someone [Read more…]

So you want a freelance blogging job and you see lots of places advertising for bloggers in exchange for a rev share, should you accept? Some offer a 50-50 revenue split, others more and some less.  [Read more…]

Monetizing Blogs: Know Your Readers

If there’s one thing I learned in four years of FWJ, it’s that if you don’t know a thing about your community’s habits, you won’t be able to monetize your blogs. For instance, most of the freelance writing community are “clickers” not “buyers”. Putting up affiliate ads for products and services doesn’t work. However, many pay per click ads work or job search tools that pay me for each sign up also do OK. Truth be told, the bulk of FWJ’s income comes from Google Adsense. That doesn’t mean Adsense is the best source of revenue for you, however. I [Read more…]

Do the ends justify the means – figuring out if a client is worth it

In Deb’s post, I Don’t Hate Blog Networks, she says,“My only concern about blogging for a network is whether or not the ends justify the means. Does the amount of money you’re being paid adequately compensate the work going into your blog? If you’re working your butt off for less than minimum wage, you may want to consider whether or not blogging for a network is a good choice for you.” Which is so true, I’m pointing it out here again. You can apply this thinking to any writing client, not just blog networks. No matter what sort of writing [Read more…]
