Valentine’s Day Gifts for Writers
My husband is a wonderful man but when it comes to buying gifts, he kind of sucks. I’m still remembering the Christmas he got me a paper shredder. There was another Christmas he wanted to get me a Brita Water Filter but I of heard about it and the look I gave him put an end to that. But he’s getting better, especially since I give him lists.
Valentine’s Day is coming up and if you’re looking for something to give to the writer in your life, or something to put on your list, these ideas may help.
I love this. Card Bleachers. If you’re like me and have post it’s all over everything, you’ll appreciate being able to see your notes before you in an organized and elegant manner.
This lap desk will keep you portable! You can work in the car, on the back deck or in front of the television.
I saw this at Inky Girl some time ago, I love this typewriter key bracelet from the New York Public Library.
Those of you who write fiction might appreciate this "Careful, you may end up in my novel" t-shirt.
What are your suggestions for Valentine’s Day gifts for writers? Do share…

I like that last one!
February 1st, 2008 at 4:01 amI’m sorry to say it Deb, but I understand why your husband has such a hard time finding gifts for you. Is this all you can come up with to beat a shredder? A lap desk? The last two choices are cute, but I’d take a Brita filter over the first two any day.
February 1st, 2008 at 4:16 amWay to go, Derek. You’ve just earned a place in Deb’s novel.
February 1st, 2008 at 4:28 amI recall getting an ironing board cover one Christmas.
The bag of lemons I got the next year was an improvement. I love lemons…
February 1st, 2008 at 4:33 amMy husband purchased me a Crockpot and some candles with my favorite scents one year. I am a sucker for kitchen gadgets, so the crock was great. My friends thought it was unromantic, but I’m of the opiion that if he does anything to show his love, it is enough.
I know women love to get pretty things, but men think differently than we do. If they buy us something they think will be useful in our work or around the house, it is their way of being loving.
Thanks for this post, Deb. You’ve given me an idea!
February 1st, 2008 at 4:41 amI love the t-shirt! I just called across the apartment to my guy about it, and I got a kind of polite, “That’s nice.” I think my geekiness has finally surpassed his.
February 1st, 2008 at 5:52 amIt could always be worse! In college a classmate actually got a toilet one Christmas from her husband! They were remodeling on a budget that year and he thought it was practical to go for the ‘good one’. If memory serves, I think she said she stormed out for the day….
Hey Deb, didn’t you say you were remodeling? Should we drop a line to Mr Ng?
Ha, ha
February 1st, 2008 at 6:04 amI would love the lap desk! I’m actually thinking of getting one when I buy a notebook next month.
But really, just chocolates would do for me, being a chocoholic.
February 1st, 2008 at 6:17 amMy husband and I have a long standing tradition - we get each other a CD for Valentine’s day. It stems from the days when that is all we could afford.
Deb’s suggestion of the bracelet reminded of another bracelet I’ve seen that might be good for the writer/reader in your life. It’s an “I read banned books” bracelet.
Amazon has it here
http://www.amazon.com/I-Read-Banned-Books-Bracelet/dp/B000I3P9JG
I also recommend Moleskine books - I love the three packs of small lined notebooks.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:03 amActually, I’m in love with the card bleachers, all “organized and elegant.” I’m a freak for paper stuff - that’s my geekdom!
Truly, my desk right now could use a couple of those….
February 1st, 2008 at 8:26 amLOL! Deb, the first gift my now husband bought for me was a Brita pitcher. I actually asked him if he was joking, as I thought maybe the jewelry I had asked for was inside the box. I thought the gift was a sign that he wasn’t very serious about me… turns out he’s just not such a good gift giver.
February 1st, 2008 at 9:10 amI have to say, my husband bought me a Pur water filter one year for Mother’s Day, but it is the most used appliance in my house. It’s not only a water filtration unit, but an actual water cooler so we have hot, room temp. or ice cold water at the touch of a button and I don’t have to buy the giant water jugs for it - it is filled straight from our faucet.
February 1st, 2008 at 6:22 pmHey,
Guys will be guys. I remember thinking a vaccuum cleaner would be a great gift for my Mother when I was a kid.
It’s in our genes.
February 1st, 2008 at 6:33 pm@Phil - for some it would be. But if anyone really wanted to get me a present - I’d like the character Monk for a weekend.
Monk would go nuts in my house - the clutter would give him fits and by the end of the weekend, boy would my house look fantastic!
February 1st, 2008 at 7:11 pmI like those. My boyfriend, upon opening his Christmas gift (he got me a gift card… but I like presents, so I went a little over the top), said, “Oh no! Valentine’s Day is coming up! I don’t know what to get you… all I know… all I can think of is chocolate and roses. Is that okay, or should I ask my sister?”
February 1st, 2008 at 8:11 pmMy husband is hit or miss. He tries really hard though so I can’t get too upset with him and usually he gets me some nice things. One year he bought me some journals and a really nice pen set, not the cheap 5 for 3.00 pens that I usually use. When it comes to CD’s he tends to buy me ones that we both like so he can “borrow” them. I bug him about that from time to time and then he will buy me something he says he hates and ends up “borrowing” them anyways. This christmas he went and bought me something that has been sitting on my list for 3 years now. A punching bag! Yes, I know, my lists are a little off but what can I say, I’m me.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:54 pmSirena: I would kill for a punching bag in my house!
I’m a super-geek, so my boyfriend will usually get me something like a 2 Gb Micro-SD card for my phone
February 1st, 2008 at 10:38 pmI think it’s a matter of personal taste and what we like as individuals. I’d be disappointed if my husband bought me jewelry since I never wear the stuff, but I like refinishing furniture so if he bought me a fancy palm sander, I’d be thrilled!
February 2nd, 2008 at 1:34 amThese gifts that get me jumpy with writing joy.
* Gift certificates to any bookstore
* Subscriptions to literary mags or writing industry mags
* Coffee & hot cocoa
* A massage (after hours of writing, my neck and shoulders are the great big knot between my head and my torso)
* A Neo word processor (http://www.alphasmart.com/danastore/neo_features.html)
* Blank journals
Sigh…
February 2nd, 2008 at 7:24 amLove the “careful you may wind up in my novel” shirt. I want it bad. I will show it to my husband, because I don’t have a good excuse to get it otherwise. My husband likes “practical” gifts. Oh, I tried romantic to no avail. Practical? Okay, I will teach you a lesson. I bought him some cassarole dishes. We still use them. Yes, they are practical.
February 2nd, 2008 at 7:48 amI love the t-shirt and might need to break down and get if for myself. Can’t recall the last Valentine’s Day gift and don’t get me started on my birthday
