Writing Gigs

Thanks to Sarah for this lead:

This is an ongoing gig, and it is with Coffee House Digest. Right now, they are taking queries for articles until Oct 25 for the Jan/Feb 2008 issue. The contributors compensation is as follows:Department ( 450-500 words) $0.10 per word

Feature ( 1,000-,1200 words) $0.10 per word

Cafe En Scene $25.00 per submission.

Photographers are encouraged to apply as well. They would be on an assigned photo shoot ( includes film/developing) and the rate is gratis with photo credit. These information comes from their editorial contract. Billing is to be sent to the editor. As per the editorial contract, ” Invoices will be paid 30 days after editor approval. Invoices must be current. Any invoices 60 days in arrears may not be paid.

I am not affiliated at all with this company, I just know that they are looking for writers, and I am sure hat there are great writers that also frequent your blog. Their website is www.CoffeeHouseDigest.com. The editorial contract was sent to me after I e-mailed a query letter with interest in writing for them.

Leads…

Good luck!

    You are quite, welcome Deb!

Also…my apologies for all of those blatent misspelled words…yikes! Can I just chalk it up and say that as a hard-working freelance writer that I was tired? ;) LOL

Many thanks for the leads today! Kudos to you!

I replied to Freelance Writers-Las Vegas and the other Freelance Writers near the bottom of the list. They emailed back almost immediately with a link that leads to GoFreelance.com. Just thought you’d like to know.

  3. Peggy (moonslice from AW) Says:

I considered Coffee House Digest a few weeks ago when I read about them in Writer’s Market. The entry says they make “work-for-hire assignments.” I’m not sure what that is, but I seem to remember it isn’t preferred.

    Can someone explain?

Thanks Sarah for passing along that info. I might send them an idea.

  4. Mariella Says:

Mary Ann>> Got the same reply. It’s a common technique they use to get writers to sign-up.

Peggy>> It means you lose all rights to what you write for them and that you’d have transferred the full copyright of your work upon payment.

GoFreelance.com pisses me off. Those ads are false ads, and you should flag them anytime you run across them.

GoFreelance.com has a habit of tricking you into signing up with a cheap 7-day trial, and then not letting you cancel your membership — meaning that you keep getting charged, and you can’t get reach anyone to get the problem fixed. The company was originally called Freelance Work Exchange, and is owned by Rob Palmer.

I’ve written extensively about the company on my blog. You can see the most recent post here. My very first post on the company, which contains A LOT of information about the membership cancellation problem, can be found here.

  6. Katharine Swan Says:

I should mention also that my most recent post is less than a month old. These problems with GoFreelance.com/Freelance Work Exchange/Rob Palmer may have started quite some time ago, but they still keep cropping up.

  7. Peggy (moonslice from AW) Says:

Mariella, I thought that’s what work for hire means, but they also say they buy first North American rights. Confusing. I guess I’ll just have to ask them if I submit.

  8. Micah Says:

I too recieved the same response. I already signed up and it is annoying.

  9. Mariella Says:

Peggy> oh, then yes, it might be best to ask them about it.

Micah> you signed up for GoFreelance?

  10. Katharine Swan Says:

Whoa, I missed the context of Micah’s last post. Micah, did you really sign up for GoFreelance? If so, when, and how is it going?

  11. Micah Says:

I signed up a couple weeks ago. And it’s going nowhere.

Wordpress shut down my blog saying violation of terms of service. I have no idea what I did wrong and can’t contact the support team until tomorrow. Anyone else have problems with wordpress or know of what I could of done perhaps?

  12. Katharine Swan Says:

Well, if you decide to cancel your membership, best of luck. I hope you are one of the lucky ones who don’t have any problems with it.

I have no idea what your violation of terms of service would be about. Your Adsense code being mis-entered, maybe? The good news is that they should be able to reinstate you if you are able to resolve the problem with them.

  13. Mariella Says:

Micah, I checked your blog and click on the “Terms of Service” link. I think Wordpress thinks your blog is a splog (spam blog) because that part of the TOS was highlighted. I had also encountered a similar happening before. I ran 7 blogs in blogspot and Blogger shut down 6 of those seven because they thought they were spam blogs.

  14. Mariella Says:

And Micah, if you don’t want to pay GoFreelance’s $30 monthly fee (at least that’s how much I think it is), you better cancel your trial subscription earlier than seven days. Don’t wait for the seventh day itself. That is unless of course, you’ve already paid for full membership.

  15. Katharine Swan Says:

Interesting about Micah’s blog. Micah, what had you added to it since you first showed it to me? I wonder what they thought was spam.

  16. Micah Says:

Not spam. It was advertising that I added. Not allowed. Adsense or any other third party. It’s okay…I’m thinking I like this new one better.

  17. Mariella Says:

I think for wordpress.com, you have to pay to be allowed to add Adsense. They also allow you to add your own domain name for a fee right? Which brings me back to the question: Which is better — using Wordpress.com or hosting WP on my own server?
