Where do you look for work?

hen I first began freelancing, I had no clue where to look for work. There were a few job boards here and there, and when Craigslist first began it only covered San Francisco. It wasn’t easy for a new writer to find work back then, now I think it’s much easier.

I don’t really troll the job boards as much as I used to, though I do try and see what’s out there. When I look for jobs I usually visit the aforementioned Craigslist and ProBlogger. If I have time, I’ll give Indeed a whirl. I’m past the point where I need to do the daily troll, however.

So where do you look for work? Do you peruse the local newspapers or check out listings on line? Do you go to more corporate job boards such as Monster, or is Craigslist more your speed?

This is great, because it’s always interesting to hear about new places to look for work. I found your site, Deb, a few months ago, and it’s been very helpful. But, I also look at Writersweekly.com (Angela Hoy’s site), Journalismjobs.com, SunOasis of Jobs, and on Craigslist, as of late. Or, there are times when I’ll just type in a city’s name and write ‘media’ to see what comes up.

My goal for next months, once BOTH kids are in school, is to get my brochure together and start passing it out around town to see if I can pick up work that way. Marketing yourself can be time consuming, but it’s also kind of a kick. I do PR and I always get a thrill when someone wants to do a feature on a client, but it’s even better when they want to hire me!

I don’t need to troll anymore either:)

I approach companies I want to work for. I’ll peruse CL every now and then. and Monster. That’s about it:)

I split my time between magazine markets and freelance writing jobs. For markets, I mostly browse the bookstore, find magazines I like, read a few back issues and then query the editor. For freelance writing jobs, I check out your site, Deb. I sometimes check out a few other similar blogs and job boards… but not many, and not often.

I haven’t trolled in months, although I’ll probably need to a little looking once the summer rush wears off. My favorite place to look is your blog, but I’ll also check Denver Craigslist and occasionally Monster. WritersWeekly.com has some good markets and jobs on Wednesdays.

I wish I didn’t have to troll daily anymore :( I have a list of about 25 sites that I go to for writing including Bloggerjobs.com, writing-world.com and this site. I am curious to see if anyone has any gems that I have not found yet :) I am happy to share all the sites with you, just contact me!

I use Craigslist a lot, though the fake offers frustrate me.

  7. V. Neely Says:

Must say I’ve had the most success with Craigslist, though I’m looking to expand my online horizons a bit…

  8. Eun Jung Says:

I use Craigslist too. I’ve been pleased to see (though it wasn’t me) writers posting on Craigslist warning each other about fake opportunities and scams. There are a lot of folks that want to take advantage of us, and I’m happy someone is holding them accountable.

Otherwise, I usually find my leads right here.

I am new to freelancing (9 months) and the jobs I look for are pretty specific (math education K-12 and some college). I find jobs on careerbuilder/monster type sites but I also look on ed publishers’ websites for freelance opportunities. My favorite sites:

    Freelance Writing Jobs (Thanks Deb!)
    CraigsList
    WritersWeekly.com
    WAHM.com/jobs.html
    online-writing-jobs.com/jobbank
    mediabistro.com/joblistings/

I’ve been blessed enough to land regular writing jobs using a combination of these sites and referrals from satisfied customers. I’d really like to hear from other education writers and how they find work. :-D

I use this site, as well as craigslist and www.telecommuting-writing-jobs.com.

Thanks for all you do, Deb!

I generally just go to newsjobs.net, which links to many of the sites listed in previous comments. From there, I tend to go to places like Craigslist, Journalism Jobs, Sunoasis and a few others. I’ve probably gotten the most work from Craigslist, with FreelanceWriting.com coming in second.

I had much the same problem when I started freelancing. I’ve since managed to find work from several sources, not least Elance.

Although some people deride its large numbers of poorly-paid jobs, there are some decent opportunities and I have found a number of good-quality assignments through the site. More valuably, I have also found a few ongoing clients and had several referrals from my Elance activities - so it is worth considering, membership fee notwithstanding.

thanks to all! i browse daily here and sometimes others…. I am still trying to figure out how freelancing really happens. i have my BA in creative writing and am returning this fall for my MFA and i have not figured it out yet…. this all helps though…. thanks, Deb!

I started out checking Debbie Ridpath Ohi’s www.electricpenguin.com/ohi/jobs before she stopped posting job leads to focus on her Market Watch.

I am one of the bloggers for http://dailyjoblist.telecommuting-writing-jobs.com and http://www.freelancebloggingjobs.com — I blog there one week per month — but I check both of those blogs for jobs almost every day, even when it’s not my week to find the jobs. When I’m scouring for jobs to post to those blogs, here are the places I check:

    For freelance writing jobs:
    http://www.indeed.com
    http://www.simplyhired.com
(both of the above pick up jobs from Monster, Career Builder, Yahoo Jobs, etc)
    http://journalismjobs.com
    http://www.writejobs.com/cgi-bin/telecommutingjobs.pl
    http://www.writerfind.com/freelance_jobs
    http://online-writing-jobs.com
    http://craigslist.org

    For blogging jobs:
    http://jobs.problogger.net
    http://performancing.com/blogger-jobs
    http://performancing.com/forum/326
    http://www.bloggerjobs.biz
    http://weblogs.about.com

I’ll also occasionally visit Anne’s aboutfreelancewriting.com or John’s poewar.com for job leads. I also check here, now that I’ve found this blog.

Hi Deb. I just wanted to say thanks for your jobs board. Today I landed my first assignment for a job posted here.

  16. allycat Says:

you mean theres other places then here? I like the WAHM.com “telecommuting” jobs. I get a TON of bites there. I think many WAHMs will try for those jobs, and so the employer is happy when an established writer ends up in the pile. So yeah, lots of jobs there!

  17. Katrina Says:

Funny enough, I only look here and on Anne Wayman’s site :) I love you two!

  18. Trisha Says:

I get most of my gigs through craigslist. I get leads from here, too.

I wish that i could find an experienced mentor that could show me the ropes to success.

I guess I have to figure it out the hard way. :)
