Freelance Writing

In the past few months, we made quite a few changes here at Freelance Writing Jobs. We changed the design, we changed our URL and we evolved from being a blog that only listed links to job leads to a blog listing blogging and writing job leads and tips and ideas for making it as a freelance writer or problogger. Many of you have responded in a positive manner to the changes, others have not. I’m very interested to learn what it is you hope to accomplish by visiting my little blog. Please tell me what you want by participating in the two polls below and also leaving comments. This blog has always been about community, so it only makes sense to find out if you’re all happy with the changes so far. Thanks so much for your input!

Deb I enjoy most of the tips and articles here. What I like least are the ones teaching me how to blog for myself. I’m more interested in learning how to blog for other than start and monetize my own blog.

I enjoy everything about this site, Deb. It’s a Must-Bookmark Site. The jobs and information you present are invaluable. Thanks!

  3. Wendy Says:

Too hard to choose best and least… I love it all! For me, my focus has shifted from looking for jobs to reading your tips and taking part in the discussions. I’m so glad you enhanced the site beyond just a job listing because you offer so much! Thanks for everything.

It’s so difficult to choose. I picked the reader mail, because it’s my absolute favorite and none of the other blogs I read do that.

I don’t like to be negative about other people’s blogs, but since you’ve asked… I chose cover letters as the thing I like least. It was fun for a week, but we’re all saying the same thing over and over at this point.

I see the traffic building/social networking doesn’t seem to be popular, but I do enjoy those posts even though that didn’t get my top vote.

Just my two cents. This is one of my favorite blogs, and I think you and Jodee do a great job. I don’t mind skipping over the posts that don’t apply to me to get to the other stuff. And I like the kitten pictures. :-p

Yep, this is an unfair question. I have not seen anything on the site that I didn’t like. I don’t do much blogging, so info on that is not helpful to me at this time, but that doesn’t mean it won’t someday be, nor does it mean that others don’t need it. Of course, the best would be the job leads, which is why I come here, but is that better than the cover letter clinic???? Probably not! (Although I have been so slammed with work that i haven’t been able to implement any of the tips i got yet). So, I didn’t vote! I love it all!

    Hi, Deb

First of all, thanks for your site!

This is probably an extremely ignorant question, but where is your e-mail address through which to contact you? (i.e. submit cover letters for critique, etc.) Perhaps it is obvious, and I’m just missing it…

    Thanks!

  7. Susan Says:

Along with the serious things… the occasional kitty pictures are great! I think the lovely girl in your header needs her own kitty…

    Love the blog. Thanks!

  8. Amanda Says:

Like everyone else seemed to say, it was difficult to choose one thing about the blog I like best. I think it’s all really valuable info, and the fact that it’s a fantastic resource for job leads PLUS chock full of advice from experienced freelancers is what makes it a must-bookmark blog. Thanks!

I’m glad I’m not alone in not being such a big fan of the traffic building stuff…the rest is so great, but for some reason that doesn’t jibe with me. To each their own, right?

However, no writing blog should have the same typo twice in one post!

Deb - I’m in a sweet, salaried tech writing gig, but I just turned 40 and had the “is this what I’ll be doing when I’m 50″ freakout moment. That’s when I found and subscribed to your site. Your variety of articles combined with the postings is helping me develop a more solid idea of what a freelance life might be like. That’s something I can’t get on plain job-listing sites. Thanks for the work you put in here!

  12. Meg Says:

I really liked the cover letter clinics, it’s great to see what kind of info others are providing and look at my own pitches with new eyes.

  13. J. Edward Says:

I love the writing jobs listing… I’ve picked up a number of jobs thanks to your hard work in finding ads to post. The thing I like least wasn’t one of the options, though, so I didn’t vote on it. Pretty much the only thing that I don’t like about Freelance Writing Jobs is the fact that I’ve seen a few occasions (including in one of the Reader Mail responses) where it’s been at least hinted at that in order to be a successful freelance writer you have to be able to blog. I’ve done some blogging, but I generally don’t find it enjoyable and I worked as a freelance writer for 3 years before I even took up my first blogging job. I understand that part of the focus of this site now is on blogging, but I think that the importance of blogging as a writing medium has been skewed a bit from time to time.

  14. Lauren Says:

Hi Deb. I added my vote saying my favorite is the job listings, but I wanted to be able to cast a vote for several of them. I come first for the job listings, but I also enjoy the writing and blogging tips and ideas for finding work. I even liked the cover letter clinic–I think it really helped me make my cover letter better. And the reader mail is helpful too. Many times, the reader’s question is something I’ve wondered or needed help with also.
Thanks for a great site all around!

  15. John Platt Says:

I’m not voting, because I like everything about the site, especially lately, thanks to the broader scope of articles and advice. You’re doing a great job!

  16. Krista Says:

I can’t believe the reader mail was voted as the thing that visitors liked least. Please don’t get rid of it! It’s my favorite part, except for the jobs of course.

  17. Rei Says:

I like everything :) While I’m not a blogger, I still like reading the tips for blogging, because it expands my view on the freelancing world. Reader mail is always a good read and I’ve learned a lot from your cover letter clinic.

    Keep up the great work!
