Improving Your Writing with ChatGPT: A Guide for Freelance Writers

As a freelance writer, your ability to communicate effectively through the written word is essential to your success. Whether you’re crafting marketing copy, blog posts, or articles for publication, your writing needs to engage your readers and convey your message with clarity and impact.

In this first installment of our ChatGPT guide for freelance writers, we look at how to improve your writing skills using tips and strategies provided by ChatGPT. With its vast “knowledge” (read: access to data) of language, ChatGPT can help you enhance your writing style, grammar, punctuation, and overall composition.

I know, you might be thinking, “There’s no replacement for human writing. No AI can replicate my tone and style of writing.

You’re right!

But, this technology has access to tons of data, not to mention the ability to manipulate it, that it can contribute to our writing skills.

Think of it this way…your writing is influenced by your knowledge of grammar, structure, vocabulary, etc. It is influenced by the writing of others (your favorite journalist, author, or blogger…).

With ChatGPT, you get to see other types of writing that you may never have encountered otherwise. It helps you with grammar rules. Think of it as Grammarly on steroids.

So, whether you’re a seasoned freelance writer or just starting out, you’ll be able to add another layer to your writing by taking advantage of AI-assisted writing.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

Understanding ChatGPT

We already discussed the basics of ChatGPT in our introductory post, ChatGPT for Freelance Writers, so we’ll just touch on it here. Let’s keep it simple.

You know how sometimes you need help with something, like writing an email or finding a good restaurant, and you ask your friends for advice? Well, ChatGPT is kind of like that, but instead of asking your friends, you’re asking a smart computer program.

It’s trained to understand and respond to all sorts of questions and prompts, like “What’s the weather like today?” or “Can you give me some tips for writing a resume?“.

And the cool thing is, it’s always learning and getting better, so the more people use it, the smarter it gets! It’s basically like having a really helpful and knowledgeable friend 🙋🏽‍♀️ who’s always available to chat.

How ChatGPT Can Help Freelance Writers

You know how you get stuck thinking of new ideas for your piece? They say writers work even while sitting at their desks, looking out the window, daydreaming…(I concur!) This is only one of the ways ChatGPT can help.

Let’s explore how it can help you in several different areas.

Generating ideas

One of the biggest challenges freelance writers face is coming up with fresh ideas for their projects. With ChatGPT, you can easily generate new ideas by simply inputting a prompt or topic. Its advanced language processing capabilities allow it to analyze and understand the prompt, and provide you with several relevant and unique ideas for your project.

Take a look at this example:

The suggested topics may not be exactly what you use, but you can see how they can kickstart those writing juices.

Writing assistance

ChatGPT can also assist you with writing by providing feedback on your grammar, syntax, and sentence structure. By inputting a draft of your writing, ChatGPT can identify errors and suggest improvements to make your writing clearer and more effective. It can even provide alternative wording suggestions to help you convey your message more effectively.

Enhance writing skills

For those looking to improve their overall writing skills, ChatGPT can be a valuable tool. By inputting prompts or topics, you can practice your writing and receive feedback on your style, tone, and other areas for improvement. Additionally, ChatGPT can provide you with writing prompts to help you practice and improve specific areas of your writing.

Research assistance

Research is a crucial part of freelance writing—and one of the most time-consuming tasks. ChatGPT can help make it easier by providing valuable insights and suggestions. By inputting a research question or topic, ChatGPT can analyze the available data and provide you with relevant information to help you write a more informed and persuasive piece.

Let’s say you need information on abductions in the US. (Writers can get in trouble for our search histories…this search is probably lame compared to others😅)

You need hard numbers from credible sources. Instead of having to scour Google for the information, just ask ChatGPT.

How easy is that? You may have to refine your query a couple of times to find exactly what you need—and manually check the sources—but it will cut your research time significantly.

Common Writing Challenges and How ChatGPT Can Help

Let’s dig deeper and look at specific writing challenges and how you can use ChatGPT to overcome them.

Overcoming writer’s block

This is an extension of what we talked about earlier—generating ideas. Perhaps the most annoying common writing challenge is writer’s block, which can happen to anyone at any time. When you’re stuck and can’t seem to get your ideas flowing, ChatGPT can help. By providing a prompt or a question related to your topic, ChatGPT can generate ideas and suggestions that may spark your creativity and help you overcome writer’s block.

When you get stuck writing your murder mystery novel, why not take a break and answer some writing prompts instead?

Improving grammar and syntax

Another common challenge is improving grammar and syntax. While ChatGPT may not be perfect, it can help you catch errors in your writing. You can input your draft or parts of it into ChatGPT and it will offer suggestions for improvements, including grammar and syntax. It’s important to remember that ChatGPT is not a substitute for human proofreading, but it can be a useful tool to complement your own editing efforts.

Just like what I’ve always said about Grammarly, right? It’s a great first line of defense, but you always, always do your own proofreading and editing.

Enhancing clarity and coherence

Clarity and coherence are essential for effective writing. ChatGPT can help you achieve these goals by suggesting ways to rephrase or simplify your sentences, and by providing feedback on the overall flow and organization of your ideas. By inputting your writing into ChatGPT, you can get suggestions for how to make your writing clearer and more coherent.

Dealing with plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious issue, whether it’s academic or content writing. ChatGPT can help you avoid it. By inputting your writing into ChatGPT, you can check for potential plagiarism by comparing your writing to a large database of texts. This can help you identify any passages that may be too similar to existing works and make appropriate changes. However, it’s important to note that ChatGPT may not catch all instances of plagiarism, and it’s always a good idea to double-check your work using other plagiarism detection tools or by consulting with a human proofreader.

This part, I am not sure just how effective it is. My tests, so far, say that the content is original and not plagiarized. Even if I copy-paste content that is published on another site, it gives me the same result: no plagiarism.

Full disclosure: I am still learning, so perhaps I am not using this tool the right way. We’ll deal with this in detail in later posts.

Tips for Using ChatGPT Effectively

Understand the limitations of AI

While ChatGPT is a sophisticated language model, it’s important to keep in mind that it has limitations. It’s not a human being, and it doesn’t have emotions, creativity, or common sense. As a result, there may be times when it provides inaccurate or nonsensical responses. It’s important to approach ChatGPT with a critical eye and not blindly accept its answers.

Folks, I can’t emphasize this enough. AI has its limitations. As such, we should not be afraid of it replacing us! Neither should we say it’s not good enough because it’s not human. Not us.

Instead, we should accept these limitations, work within their boundaries, and use the advantages the technology affords.

Choose the right prompts

One key to getting good responses from ChatGPT is to provide it with the right prompts. When crafting a prompt, think about what you want ChatGPT to help you with and try to be as specific as possible. Vague prompts may lead to vague or off-topic responses. Also, consider using open-ended prompts that encourage the platform to generate creative responses.

Let’s look at some examples.

Vague prompts:

  1. “Tell me about life.”
  2. “What are your thoughts on the universe?”
  3. “Discuss the meaning of existence.”
  4. “Can you tell me about love?”
  5. “What is the purpose of life?”
  6. “Explain the nature of reality.”
  7. “What is the essence of humanity?”
  8. “What are your thoughts on the meaning of happiness?”
  9. “Discuss the concept of time.”
  10. “Tell me about the secrets of the universe.”

Ask anyone these questions, and see what answers you get. (Now, ask me, and I have the answer. 42.)

Let’s make these prompts more specific, and therefore, useful.

  1. “What are some universal truths about life that you have learned through personal experiences or observations?”
  2. “What are some current theories about the origins and nature of the universe that fascinate you?”
  3. “How do different cultures and belief systems define and interpret the concept of existence, and what are your thoughts on this topic?”
  4. “Can you discuss the different types of love and how they manifest in relationships, friendships, and other forms of connection?”
  5. “What are some historical and philosophical perspectives on the purpose of life, and how do you personally define it?”
  6. “What is the relationship between perception, consciousness, and reality, and how have various thinkers attempted to understand this relationship?”
  7. “What are some key attributes that define human nature, and how do they shape our beliefs, values, and behaviors?”
  8. “What are some scientific and philosophical perspectives on the meaning of happiness, and what are some practical ways to cultivate more happiness in our lives?”
  9. “Can you discuss the concept of time as it relates to physics, philosophy, and culture, and how different people and societies experience and interpret it?”
  10. “What are some of the mysteries of the universe that we are currently trying to solve, and what are some of the most promising theories and discoveries in the field of astrophysics?”

See the difference?

Provide context

Context is essential for ChatGPT to provide accurate and relevant responses. When providing a prompt, try to provide as much context as possible, including any relevant information, such as the topic, tone, and audience. This can help ChatGPT better understand what you’re looking for and provide a more helpful response.

Think about it—even humans need context!

Use multiple sources

Writing 101: Don’t rely on a single source!

ChatGPT is just one source of information, and it’s always a good idea to verify the information it provides. If you’re using ChatGPT for research, be sure to consult multiple sources to ensure the information is accurate and up-to-date. This can also help you get a better understanding of a topic and provide more comprehensive responses.
