Possibly the Worst Freelance Writing Job Ad of All Time

Here on the Other Stuff blog, I occasionally like to share with you some of the most ridiculous ads I find calling for freelance writers. Usually, these ads are poorly written, offer little to no money, or really don’t care about the quality of the work to be done. The following, however, hits the trifecta.

I can say one thing for it, though. It’s hard to work up too much ire when the whole thing is only two lines long. Here is the description, in it’s entirety:

“I am looking for freelance article writers who can write small articles of about 50 words. There are 270 articles and I will pay $27 for these. The quality of articles doesn’t matter. It can be in simple English.”

So, this person, who doesn’t care about the quality of the “articles,” is willing to pay ten cents a piece for them. That’s a whopping $0.002 per word.

As the resident snarky FWJ blogger, even I am rendered speechless by this one. What’s more? At least one freelance writer who seems to have a good command of the English language and claims to have 20 years of experience has actually applied for the job. Man, times must really be tough.

I don’t think you read it right, Deb.. he meant $27.00 per article. Or possibly per word. I’m banking on the latter.

For some of us, times ARE tough! I gave up paid employment 6 months ago to become freelance but since the turn of the year, work has been VERY hard to come by. So much so that I may have to return to my old job . . . and that feels like a return to prison.

erm . . . not that I know what actual prison feels like! 🙂

That is the most bizarro ad I have ever read.

I would probably make more (heck, a lot more) begging in the streets, and I live in Southeast Asia. And I won’t even have to pay for utilities.

Have seen a lot of ads on craigslist where ‘quality of the article does not matter, it’s the quantity that we’re interested in’. Often am tempted to apply just to see what the ‘writing’ is for! As for ridiculous fees- unfortunately it’s becoming more common than we’d like to believe!

    Wow. Just, wow.

I thought about applying to some of the content mills, but just yesterday I read an article that came from Associated Content that was prominently featured on MSN, and good GOD that was the most poorly-written article I’ve ever seen. They’re apparently not too picky about their content.

I wonder how much the writer got paid, or if they did. It makes me wonder.
